Just like the title says, today was a long day of boozing it up! We got a super late start on the day, since we were up till 3 the night before. By the time we finally made our way out, it was already 1 pm.
Our first stop was Mallory Square and Margaritaville Resort. There were two cruise ships docked, which made life hell here for a few hours. Cruisers can be like roaches; they swarm in and infest everything.
Needless to say, there were people everywhere at Mallory Square. We weren’t overly impressed with either place. Mallory Square is a huge shopping trap for cruise ships and looks like every other port-of-call area. Margatiaville Resort looked nice, but the pool was under construction, so there wasn’t a lot to see.
From there, we decided it was time for a drink, as we were already melting. We decided to try out the very first Margaritaville Restaurant. It is definitely a tourist trap, but we do love us some Buffet.
The atmosphere was typical, and the Landshark cold. It was nice to cool off and do a little people watching.

Margaritaville Key West
We did find a very neat “change your latitude, change your attitude” sign that will be finding a home on our travel wall at home.
From there, we had planned to go to the pool, but then we remembered the distillery. Right by our marina is the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery. They give free tours and tastings.

Entrance to the distillery

I love this sign. The dream is to quit your job and live somewhere tropical.
The tour was very interesting. I love seeing how alcohol is distilled.

The distilling room. They age their rum in barrels that have been cured in salt water.

This bottle of rum was in a barrel when Irma hit, and the barrel was mostly submerged in seawater. They said the rum tastes different than any of their other bottles, and we had to agree. Such an interesting once-in-a-lifetime bottle, we had to pick one up.
We still had an hour to kill before happy hour, so now it was finally time for the hot tub, oops, I mean swimming pool. The water is not that refreshing when it is so hot, even the ocean is over 90 degrees! We enjoyed our swim anyway, as it was better than sitting in the heat.
Finally, Happy Hour. We learned really quickly that Happy Hour is a big thing in Key West, and we have enjoyed it to the fullest. Our favorite place is at Conch Republic, where there is a buy-one-get-one-free drink from 4-7. It is right on the Harbor Walk, and the people watching is great.

Happy hour(s) drinking
After we had our fill of happy hour drinks, we were on to dinner. We went to Alonzo’s Oyster Bar. It was probably my least favorite dinner so far, but still good. I could possibly have been a little tipsy, and that may have had an impact.

Oysters prepared 3 ways. I try and try, but I just do not like oysters. Raw, they are slimy, and cooked, they aren’t much better. Dave loves them, so I keep trying.

New Orleans snapper. I got the sauce on the side because everyone drowns the fish in the sauce here. We made fun of this dish because it has a potato pancake sitting on mashed potatoes. Could anything be more American than a load of fried carbs sitting on a bed of mashed carbs?!?!
After dinner, and maybe still a little tipsy, we went for a walk in our marina. There are so many types of boats, and we love looking at them and dreaming. We met a number of nice couples and had some great conversations. Boating people all have the same heart, and we learn so much from each conversation.
All in all, a great day. A little relaxing, a lot of booze, and a great time.
Tomorrow is our last day. We still haven’t hit at least 3-4 of the super famous bars, so I see one more pub crawl in our future. After that, we will be back on the water, headed to Ft Lauderdale, and then home. I am starting to get a little sad, as I see the sun setting on our trip. I just have to remember this is not the end of our adventures, just our maiden voyage.
