We decided to spend our anniversary in Prague, and what a great decision we made! It is about a 4 hour trip from Vienna, so we also stayed overnight.

We started out pretty early in the morning and decided to grab food on the road. We ended up at a McDonalds. It was the easiest and fastest off the highway, and it is fun to go into McDonalds in other countries to see what they have that is different.

Breakfast burger at McDonalds. They also have a full cafe with good coffee and pastries.

We made it to Prague around 1 and pulled into our hotel in Old Towne, Carlo IV. The hotel use to be a bank 120 years ago. It also had a Roman style heated pool and sauna, which is why we picked it.

After checking in we bundled up and headed into Old Towne for site seeing and the markets. We immediately fell in love. It is beautiful and old but also very contemporary. The shopping and food and people were all great.

They are known for their spires and have over 500. The Charles bridge took my breath away, and the markets were adorable and had amazing food.

The Charles Bridge. The most beautiful place I have ever been in on my travels.

Delicious sausage!

I ate this too fast and had to go back for a picture. It is fried cheese and they put plum jam on it. I could have eaten 10!

Spit roasted ham and spaetzle with sauerkraut and bacon! The ham was out of this world!

Can’t ever forget the Trdleníks!

We were so stuffed after an evening spent in the market, we went back to rest. When we got to the room, the hotel had left us an anniversary gift.

A rest turned into a 3 hour nap. It was definitely needed! With renewed energy, we went for dinner at our hotel. They have a fine dining restaurant and it did not disappoint. We had a wonderful meal.

Scallops with truffle sauce

Smoked veal

Duck confit with bread dumplings

Lamb shank with potatoes and creamed spinach. That spinach was so good! I inhaled it and wanted more. I have never had any so delicious.

Ice cream shaped like a pear. They poured us each a dish of chocolate sauce you dipped the ice cream in, it was awesome

After dinner we decided to have a drink in one of the hotel bars called The Vault. As you can probably guess, it was the bank Vault 120 years ago. While we were there we met an older British couple and had a great conversation.

About 1 in the morning a group of Frenchmen came in a little on the tipsy side. The first thing they did was challenge Dave to arm wrestle. This man was 5’7″ at most and tiny. They sat down to wrestle, and the guy backed out laughing. Dave picked him up and carried him back toward his seat. It was so funny and the whole group of us were laughing.

We spent the next few hours laughing and talking. It was 4am before we knew it and I was definitely on the other side of tipsy. It was a great night!

Pretty late and tipsy at this point.

We woke up very late this morning, spent a few more hours in the market and site seeing and then headed back.

We had planned to just order pizza and crash in the room, but as we walked back from the car park, I saw a small Greek restaurant and we decided to try it out.

The restaurant turned out to be amazing. We were the most stuffed we have probably been on the whole trip.

Trio of dips. The yellow one was skordalia, which is a potato and garlic dip. The pink one was our favorite. It is taramasalata. It is made from cod roe. The last one was tzatziki. The pita was fresh and homemade with a ton of seasoning.

Fish soup

Grilled shrimp, calamari, octopus, and clams with potatoes and spinach

Lamb knuckle, potatoes, and okra

We wanted dessert so bad but just too stuffed. We waddled out the door and stopped in the market for some water. As we browsed we found a whole shelf of radlers.

Dave bought one that was great, and of course had to pop the top as we walked home.

We could have easily spent a week in Prague. If you ever have a chance to go, we highly recommend it.

We only have 2 days of vacation left and we will be spending those in Budapest. We are both pretty excited to see it. We are also going to maybe try the rooster testicle soup. It is supposed to be a delicacy. We rarely shy away from the local food, just praying it tastes better than it sounds.
